Click on any of the Frequently Asked Questions below for answers. Have a question that you think should be on this page? Use our Contact Us page to let us know what it is.
Can I come in anytime I want for tutoring?
All tutoring is by appointment only. Call as early as you can to guarantee a tutoring time.
How much does it cost?
One-on-one tutoring costs $65/hour. See our Subjects & Prices page for more pricing information. Also, see our Classes & Reviews page for information on pricing for group reviews and standardized test prep. Feel free to call us with any other questions you may have.
When do I pay?
Payment is due at each appointment. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.
What if I forget my appointment?
If you forget your appointment, we have to charge you. We also require 24 hours cancellation notice, so let us know as soon as possible if you have to miss an appointment in order to avoid being charged for it.
What if I'm sick? Do I still have to pay?
Of course not. If you're sick, just call us as soon as possible and get well soon.
Can I bring a friend to my appointment?
That's a great idea as long as you both plan to work together on the same subject. The fees are different for more than one student though. (See our Subjects & Prices page and/or call for more information).
Can I get an appointment today?
Sometimes we can get you in the same day that you call. Try to plan ahead though. If you need help before a big test, there's a good chance a lot of other students do too, and some of them already have an appointment.
What ages and/or grade levels do you tutor?
While most of our students are in junior high or high school, we work with students of all ages. Feel free to call for more information if necessary.
Where do you get your tutors?
Our tutors come from all walks of life. We hire graduate students, college students, some highly-qualified high school students, certified teachers, and working professionals. All of them enjoy working with kids and benefit from the experience.
I've never had a tutor. How does it work?
First, call for an appointment. Second, show up on time. You'll meet with your tutor and discuss your assignment or project and your tutor will help you with a plan of action. Make sure to ask as many questions as you need to along the way. The whole idea is for you to feel relaxed so you can understand your schoolwork.
How many times should I come?
There's no easy answer for that one. The best guideline is for the student and the parents to discuss it. We want you to feel comfortable coming as often or as infrequently as you need. That said, consistency and regularity never hurts, and many of our students enjoy working with the same tutor on a weekly basis at a set time.
Can I have the same tutor every time?
If you plan to come in on a regular basis, we like to give you a specific time each week to meet with the same tutor. If you come in sporadically, we'll try to set you up with the same tutor, but that's when calling ahead really pays off.
Can my tutor help me with all my classes?
The best way to ensure that is to arrange it when you make your first appointment. Many of our tutors have talents in several subjects, so speak up and tell us all the classes you're taking.
Do I have to bring my books?
You should always bring your books--even if you don't use them very often in class. The best way for a tutor to help a student is to see all of the material that's relevant to the subject. That means bring books, class notes, tests, and anything else that can let the tutor see what's going on.
What type of supplies are available at The Tutoring Place?
We have pens, pencils, paper, markers, scissors, kleenex, protractors, rulers, dictionaries, calculators, and computers for the students to use. We also have some textbooks for reference.
Can I bring something to eat?
If you want something to eat, feel free to bring it with you. Try to keep the messiness to a minimum, though. We always have water if you get thirsty, usually have drink mixes available, and sometimes have snacks.
Do you have SAT and ACT classes?
We often treat test prep like our other tutoring--on a one-on-one basis. (The tutor and student go through sample tests together and then concentrate on the areas in which you need the most help.) We also offer test prep classes. See our Test Prep page, or call for more information.
My notebook is a mess...can you help me get organized?
We offer group sessions and one-on-one tutoring for study skills and organization in addition to classroom subjects. If you don't know where your notes are, it's awfully hard to study for the tests!
What about reviews for tests?
We can schedule group review sessions before major tests...call for more information. Some kids really benefit from the group environment. We also have group reviews before semester exams. Of course, you can always set up a one-on-one appointment before a test if you are not the group type.
Do you have a place where I can do work on my own?
Our classroom serves as a study hall when we're not working with a group. Students can drop in anytime we're open and get work done in a quiet environment. You can work with a friend on a project too-- just be sure to keep the noise down!
What do you do in the summer?
We never rest! We are definitely available for students who need help during summer. We also offer some special reviews and workshops to get your brain in gear before school starts.
